The Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) integration authenticates ORCID iDs and imports ORCID records into SmartSimple using the ORCID API. ORCID is an independent non-profit organization that provides a persistent identifier, an ORCID iD, that distinguishes individual researchers and links their research outputs and activities to that iD. SmartSimple uses version 3.0 of the ORCID API for this integration.
Collecting an authenticated ORCID iD allows SmartSimple to import a user's ORCID record to their profile. The integration can also add and update funding records on a user's ORCID record. This functionality is useful for researchers and research-based foundations using SmartSimple.
Who: Global administrators configure the ORCID integration. Users connect and import their own ORCID record, and internal staff or reviewers view ORCID data on user profiles.
How the ORCID Integration Works
ORCID offers a Public API that connects systems to the ORCID registry. ORCID Membership, open to any organization interested in integrating ORCID identifiers, provides access to the Member API. The Member API facilitates registration and information exchange with ORCID records, and allows connected systems to read from and write to individual ORCID records with the user's permission.

When to Use the ORCID Integration
Use the ORCID integration when:
- Users need to authenticate their ORCID iD so SmartSimple can import an accurate ORCID record to their profile.
- Staff or reviewers need to view a user's research activity, such as funding and works, directly on the user's profile.
- An application form or progress report form needs to pull researcher data from ORCID, which SmartSimple stores in JSON format.
- Staff need to add or update funding records in a user's ORCID record based on a workflow, such as a change in grant status.
