Adobe Acrobat Sign integrates with SmartSimple to enable electronic signature collection on documents generated within Web Page Views. The integration collects legally binding e-signatures, routes documents to one or more signers in parallel or sequential order, and sends automated email notifications with signing links to recipients. For definitions of signature tag parameters, see Adobe Acrobat Sign Signature Tag Parameters Reference.

To enable signing on a Web Page View:
- Navigate to the Web Page View custom field where you want signing to occur. See the Access Custom Fields section of Configure Custom Fields.
- Locate the Document section and toggle Enable E-Signature on.

- This determines where the finalized PDF document is stored within the system. It should be a multiple file upload field enabled on the same record.
It is recommended to add a workflow to the upload field to change the record status when the document uploads. This status change confirms that the signing was completed.
Add an E-Witness Signature
Add an e-witness signature to require a witness to sign immediately after a signer on a document sent through Adobe Acrobat Sign. The signer selects their own witness in Adobe Acrobat Sign, so the email address submitted for the witness is empty. For more information from Adobe, see Enable the recipient role to mark a signer with an e-witness.
E-witness signing enforces sequential signing order. If the signature flow is defined as PARALLEL, the setting is ignored.
Two roles in the signature tag syntax support e-witness signing:
SIGNWITHWITNESS - A signer who requires a witness.
WITNESS - The witness for the preceding signer.
Every SIGNWITHWITNESS signer requires a WITNESS tag immediately after that signer in the sequence. For example, if signerA has index 1, the witness has index 2.
Example
This example shows one signer who requires an e-witness.
<!--signature signerA@fake.com;SIGNWITHWITNESS;~firstname~;~lastname~;1--> <!--signature ;WITNESS;;;2-->
Example
This example shows three signers, where the second signer requires an e-witness.
<!--signature signerA@fake.com;SIGNER;~firstname~;~lastname~;1--> <!--signature signerB@fake.com;SIGNWITHWITNESS;~firstname~;~lastname~;2--> <!--signature ;WITNESS;;;3--> <!--signature signerC@fake.com;SIGNER;~firstname~;~lastname~;4-->
Incorrect Examples
Incorrect index ordering or missing roles makes the submission invalid. The following tag sequences are invalid.
Two SIGNWITHWITNESS tags with only one WITNESS tag:
<!--signature signerA@fake.com;SIGNWITHWITNESS;~firstname~;~lastname~;1--> <!--signature signerB@fake.com;SIGNWITHWITNESS;~firstname~;~lastname~;2--> <!--signature ;WITNESS;;;3-->
A WITNESS tag with an index before its signer:
<!--signature ;WITNESS;;;1--> <!--signature signerA@fake.com;SIGNWITHWITNESS;~firstname~;~lastname~;2--> <!--signature signerB@fake.com;SIGNWITHWITNESS;~firstname~;~lastname~;3-->
A final SIGNWITHWITNESS tag with no WITNESS tag after it:
<!--signature signerA@fake.com;SIGNWITHWITNESS;~firstname~;~lastname~;1--> <!--signature ;WITNESS;;;2--> <!--signature signerB@fake.com;SIGNWITHWITNESS;~firstname~;~lastname~;3-->
Flatten Attached PDFs
When generating a PDF for signing, ensure that any attached PDF files do not contain digital signatures. Adobe will reject the entire document if any attached file is digitally signed. The Adobe Sign integration permits only one digital signature field per signer.
When attaching a signed PDF using ssattach to the document being sent for e-signatures, flatten the attached PDFs first. For more information, see Adobe's documentation on How to Flatten a PDF.
