Configuration Mode enables administrators to access and modify field settings directly from within any SmartSimple record, without navigating away to the settings menu.

When to Use Configuration Mode
Use Configuration Mode to:
- Quickly access a field's configuration settings without leaving the record.
- Verify or test variable syntax against a live record using the Variable Syntax Helper.
- Troubleshoot field behavior with fast access to field settings and configuration shortcuts.
Prerequisites
Consider the following when setting up your SmartSimple instance prior to giving people access to the system:
- Configure organization settings. Establish color schemes, licensing, backup, and terminology.
- Define custom fields required for organizations. Add fields needed to accurately represent your business.
- Create or upload organizational information for both internal and external organizations.
- Define roles for individuals. Specify the roles that individuals occupy within the business.
- Establish custom fields for roles. Add fields needed to accurately represent individual roles.
- Define or upload people records for internal or external organizations.
- Subscribe to SmartSimple applications. Identify the applications required by each user group.
- Assign manager permissions to specific roles. Determine which groups are accountable for each application and feature.
Enable Configuration Mode
To enable Configuration Mode:
- Click the Menu icon in the upper navigation bar, and then select the relevant UTA/module from the Applications drop-down menu.
- Click Open on any record.
- Click Tools.
- Select Configuration Mode from the Tools drop-down menu.
- A small tab appears at the top of the page confirming Configuration Mode is active, with Refresh and Close icons.
- The Configuration Shortcuts panel also appears on the right side of the screen.
- Click a field to open the field's configuration page.
- Make any necessary updates and click Save.
Configuration Shortcuts
The Configuration Shortcuts panel contains links to many of the General Settings relevant to the record being accessed in Configuration Mode. The panel also provides access to the Variable Syntax Helper, Formula Syntax Helper, and Form Preview.
Use the Variable Syntax Helper
Variable Syntax Helper is a tool that enables administrators to test variable syntax.
To use the Variable Syntax Helper:
- Click Variable Syntax Helper in the Configuration Shortcuts panel.
- Click the Expressions panel on the left side of the Variable Syntax Helper page and enter variable syntax.
- Press the Tab key on the keyboard to view the available keywords.
- Click Evaluate.
- The results are displayed in the panel on the right side of the Variable Syntax Helper page.
Use the Formula Syntax Helper
Formula Syntax Helper is a tool that allows the selection of configured formulas, including Type specific formulas or manual entry of formulas.
To select configured formulas:
- Click Formula Syntax Helper in the Configuration Shortcuts panel.
- Click an existing overall formula or a formula specific to a configured Type.
- Click the Import icon.
- Click Evaluate.
- The results are displayed in the panel on the right side of the Formula Syntax Helper page.
To manually enter formulas:
- Click Formula Syntax Helper in the Configuration Shortcuts panel.
- Click the Formulas panel on the left side of the Formula Syntax Helper page.
- Click Evaluate.
- The results are displayed in the panel on the right side of the Formula Syntax Helper page.
Use the Form Preview
Form Preview is a tool that allows administrators to preview the UTA/module record based on a combination of Type, Status, and Role.
To use Form Preview:
- Click Form Preview in the Configuration Shortcuts panel.
- Select a Type from the drop-down menu.
- Select a Status from the drop-down menu.
- Select a Role from the drop-down menu.
- Click Preview.
- The form updates to show editable and read-only fields based on the configured permissions for the selected type, status, and role.
